From the Laboratory to the Clinic

The Armenian Institute of Physiology, part of the National Academy of Sciences, has made significant
progress in biomedical research, particularly in the field of bioimaging. The institute completed a project
funded by the Chen Zuckerberg Initiative, which focused on creating a network of biomedical
researchers across former Soviet Union states, emphasizing advanced imaging techniques. This
innovation has positioned the institute as a leader in bioimaging within Armenia.
Building on this success, the institute has secured a Horizon Europe-funded project aimed at
transforming it into a center of excellence. Under the leadership of Professor Narine Sarvazyan from
George Washington University, a new laboratory focused on hyperspectral imaging for surgical
applications has been established. The project also aims to improve the institutional compliance
environment, including enhancing ethical standards for animal research and care, and renovating
vivarium.
In addition to these developments, the institute continues its research in neurophysiology,
electrophysiology, and other areas, while actively seeking new grants to fund practical medical
applications. By balancing fundamental and applied research and fostering international collaborations,
the institute is well-positioned to make significant contributions to the global biomedical community,
according to Naira Ayvazyan, Director of the Institute.
